May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we're shining a light on something parents tell us about every single week: kids are carrying a lot right now, and the right toy can do more than entertain. It can help them breathe.
Walk into our shop on any given afternoon and you'll hear it in the conversations at the counter. Parents asking about toys that help with focus. Grandparents looking for something to settle a worried grandchild. Teachers picking up classroom tools to help kids regulate after a tough morning. Screen fatigue, social pressure, less time outside, it's all adding up, and families are looking for real, hands-on ways to help their kids cope.
The good news is play itself is one of the most powerful tools we have. And we mean that scientifically.
What Is a "Daily D.O.S.E." of Play?
Our friends at the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (ASTRA), who certify our staff as Play Experts, talk about play as a daily D.O.S.E. for the brain:
Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins. The four neurotransmitters that regulate mood, build self-esteem, and help the body relax. Play releases all of them.
That's not just a feel-good slogan. The physical act of play has been shown to lower blood pressure, ease stress, and give kids a real sense of agency at a time when so much feels out of their control. Tactile and logic-based toys, in particular, are a growing category: the global stress-relief toy market is projected to reach $105 million by 2033, driven by exactly the kind of conversations we're having in the shop every day.
"Play can bridge the communication gap between adults and children. When kids play, they're free to express their feelings and thoughts. It's a safe and fun opportunity to be themselves and dream of a world without judgment or fear."

What Flavia Is Seeing on the Floor
Our assistant shopkeeper Flavia has been doing this long enough to spot a shift when she sees one, and she's seeing one now.
"Families aren't just looking for entertainment anymore. They're looking for tools that help their children regulate emotions and manage the daily pressures of modern life. Whether it's the satisfying click of a logic puzzle or the tactile engagement of a fidget toy, these items give kids a sense of control and calm that they really need right now."
Flavia Pallozzi, Timeless Toys
So this month, we've pulled together a collection of the toys our team reaches for first when a parent comes in asking, "Do you have anything that might help?"
Our Featured "D.O.S.E. of Play" Collection
Every toy on this list earns its spot by doing one of two things: giving little hands something satisfying to do, or giving little brains a goal to focus on. Both calm the nervous system. Both give kids that quiet "I did it" feeling that builds confidence over time.
Speks
Available in a range of textures and forms, these are the fidgets we hand to anxious fingers first. Rich sensory engagement, beautifully made, and built to last. Ages 3+.
Smart Games IQ Quub
A logic puzzle that pulls kids in and quiets the room. The "outcome satisfaction" of clicking the last piece into place is a tiny mood reset all on its own. Ages 6+.
Tenzi
Fast, tactile, and endlessly replayable. The dice themselves work as a fidget, and there are over 70 game variations, so it grows with your child and the whole family can join in.
eeBoo Create a Story Cards
Beautifully illustrated cards that help kids name what they're feeling and invent stories around it. We love these for kids who have a hard time finding the words.
SmartNoggin NogginStik
A developmental favorite for the youngest babies (0 months and up). Light, sound, and touch all in one rattle, designed to support those very first milestones. Calming play starts on day one.
Our Fidget Wall
Scrunch'ems Squishy Buddies, Twiddle Twisters, Wigglitz, and a rotating cast of squeezable, stretchable, twistable favorites. If you've got a kid with nervous energy to burn, come let them pick their own. (We promise, this part is fun.)

As Flavia puts it:
"Using intuition, imagination, and reasoning through play helps children strengthen their ability to identify stressors. We're proud to be a resource for families looking to prioritize mental wellness through the simplest, most effective tool we have: the power of play."
